Hmm. I want to change this thread to a 30-minute workout on account of I've got this desire to go for a PB in the 30-minute piece. So let me ask a stupid question: why the 20-minute workout?

Because 20 minutes is a fair approximation of a 5k time. Also, there are lots of fancy equations that coaches can use to factor in things like body weight. Since a lightweight will contribute less drag to a boat, she would not need as fast of a split to be competitive with a fatty. We used to have weigh-ins before all our 20 minute tests, and then our erg scores would be ranked based on our calculated weighted splits. At least that's the Vandy Crew reasoning...

Laura, I was going to mention that it approximates a 5 K time, but I was struck by the obvious revelation that actually rowing 5 K would give you a much better approximation. They must use the 20 minutes because rowing a set time piece is more cruel than rowinging a set distance piece. If you row harder for a set distance, at least you finish sooner. Rowing harder for a set time only makes you more miserable for a longer time.

It's true. Especially for girls, 20 minutes is usually much shorter than a 5k, but I would prefer a 5k any day of the week. My splits are usually faster for a 5k than for a 20 minute test, too. Clearly, my mental game could use some work...

But I don't believe we answered your question of changing the topic to "30 minute" workout. I think it is a fine idea.
Also, you should be posting any times to Concept since this is the start of the "New Erg Year" and you may be able to claim some sort of title.

Unless you plan to train at some point for a 5k head race (which both of you should...I'll bet regattas are waaaaay more fun than bike races). You could change it to 5k times, but that might make for an even shorter workout for you than the 20 minutes, which is evidently not the effect you're going for. Do as you please. This washed up, has-been, former rower has no intention of posting any of HER times in a public forum.

Speaking of Concept2, I sent in my email saying I'd reached a million meters, and I've heard nothing back! I mean, I will DIE without that T-shirt. And on the 30-minute idea, we might as well leave it as 20 minutes. One of the years, after I win the lottery, and after Alan wins the lottery, maybe we'll go 50/50 on a fancy double skull and show up for a head race somewhere...England comes to mind....
