We have somebody small to steer the boat this afternoon. Plan is to be at the boathouse at 4:45.

I'll be there. Anyone who interested in rowing a boat should show up. Call 529-4100 if you need directions.

Okay, we didn't have a coxswain for our inaugural row, but an awful lot of things turned out pretty well (once we move past my cell phone falling in the water). Four people handled moving the boat down to the water. We adjusted the foot stretchers for the individual rowers. We got into the boat and launched in rather good fashion. A couple of us caught crabs and I for one will never post another comedic video posting of an ejection crab. We didn't capsize, we never even took in water. We could carry the boat back up the hill to the storage area.
What else we did do was move the boat and for those strokes, it felt like magic.
Now, we couldn't turn worth a damn, dove, washed out, and felt a little tippy sometimes. And a cox would have helped with all of our troubles. Our boat is a midweight and is set up to row nicely with 4X175 lb rowers and a 120 lb cox=820 lb. We probably had about 650 lb in the boat. The boat sits up higher due to the lower displacement, the oars are up around our shoulders instead of sternum, and we have a higher center of gravity.
The next time will be even better.

Thank you, Alan, Mike & Dawn! It was a blast! It will be more fun next time! I will post a few photos to facebook; Alan, I'll email a couple to you.

First off, congrats to Alan for saving his cell phone. Of course, I take all credit for finding it in its murky grave!
Second, what an absolutely thrill to move that boat on the water! Great, great fun.

Hip, hip for the phone living! Great work, Mike, spotting the shiny object in the dark!
Going back up a post or two and doing the arithmetic, we could take a 160-170 lb. cox, yes? That would allow us to widen the scope in search of a cox...

I'm sorry, guys, for Erica not showing. What does one have to do to find a small person who is also reliable?

Oh yes, I also meant to say that it was great to be on the water. Beautiful lake and impressive phone save!

Well, Thom, it could potentially be a practical challenge... but only if you had direct contact with, say, a professional coxswain. I still have not heard from Erica today... but Mag, are we going to have Annie cox today?

Hey, good thing we weren't out on the water today. I'm guessing it's not a lot of fun in the rain.

Amazing photos, Thom. The SIU rowers look perfectly at home on the water! If I weren't buried under a 15 ft high stack of books, I'd be down there to cram my giant gluteus maximus into that tiny coxswain compartment...

Thanks, Laura! I'm better with a camera than an oar on the water right now...
