Little Grassy calmed very nicely this evening in preparation for the storms. It is kinda ironic (and I hope I'm using this term correctly) that the wind usually calms down prior to the storm, making it one of the best, but diciest times to row. How long this grace period will last is where the poker playing comes in to play. I decided to row 500 m hard and 500 m easy for 10k. That makes for 10 hard pieces, about 22 minutes total and 10 lovely pieces of recovery, about 30 minutes. Heading south to begin, the wind was from that direction at about 12 mph. Not easy to row fast, but easy to row hard, and really not that easy to row easy. When I got to the south end of the lake (4 k) it was sheltered and calm and a good spot to work on a higher stroke rate. When I turned around to head back north, the entire lake had turned absolutely calm and the only other boat I had seen was gone. It was perfect. The hard 500's were just like doing them on the erg--pull hard and don't leave anything behind. The recovery periods were marked by initially slumping over the oars and then doing pause drills for 500 m. There was no thunder or lightning when I finished, but I decided to quit while I was still having fun.
