From my previous post (sorry about the double posting) we know that we have a Dirigo 4+. Dirigos are made in Maine (state motto is "Dirigo," I Lead) and this boat is about 45' long weighs about 125 lb. Dirigo has a long history as a boat maker and is known for making tough, forgiving boats. It is in decent shape and will be quite rowable once we attach riggers and attend to personnel matters. It does have wood trim that needs sanded and revarnished. Please sound off if you can help with that. We also need get the boat properly stowed at the picnic shelter. More pressing is that we need at least one coxswain This is not a trivial matter since the cox is one of the more important members of the crew. Please try to recruit someone (preferable light, loud, and not shy) for this. Coxswains have their own website at www.coxie.com It provides some guides to the job.

I am certainly willing to put some elbow grease into the effort. Just let me know when, it won't be the first time an admiral put me to work on a water craft.

What smashing good news that your club has acquired a boat! Lovely! Once you find a cox, get her in touch with me, and I will do whatever I can to help.
Cheers,
Rebecca
p.s. Meet me on the Tideway, jsho...I've got a fine use for your elbow grease.

Absolutely, I look forward to working in and on this shell in whatever way I can. As far as coxswain recruiting goes, I actually do know a very loud, very tiny girl who would be great. I haven't yet gotten a response from her, but I'll keep bugging her. Our recruitment strategy is going to have to outdo that of the Jesusbrigade, which currently vies for her time. Given her gleeful recent forays into the fine world of swear words and church skipping, I think it may be possible!

Thanks for your offer of help, Rebecca. I will take you up on that. And we all appreciate your interest in our fledgling boat club. And I'm sorry I named my dog Topolski, too. In fact, I'm so sorry that I've changed the dog's name to Rocks, after the ones I obviously have in my head. I also promise to ask Alan to refrain from refering to you as a "woman from the Fens" ever again.
And for the rest of the crew: I'll post this on a separate thread, but count on working on the boat Thursday and Friday afternoon this week.
Dawn, run the idea past your tiny friend.
And in the meantime, I'll distribute a call for coxswains through the RSO email list and through the Sport Club list.

I have downloaded my free publication of "Rowing on the Tideway" from the fine folks at the Port of London Authority and will begin researching the material promptly. Jim

Perhaps we should videotape our SlackErg sessions so that prospective coxswains may acclimate to our unique practice and conversational style in advance. Let them see how cool we are, and surely they will want to yell at, er cox, us.
